A challenging opportunity for prospective Engineers completing Physics and/or Chemistry in Yr 11. This residential experience at JCU is popular with Ayr High students.
- Engineering and Science Challenge
A highly prized opportunity for Yr 9 and 10 students to participate in 'hands on' engineering and science projects in a competition against other schools in the Townsville region. Ayr High has participated at the Queensland Finals previously and students eagerly await the competition each year.
Yr 9 students have the opportunity to experience university in this 3 day experience. Over the years, hundreds of students from Ayr High have attended and thoroughly enjoyed the varied scientific and social experiences.
- Chemistry Quiz
In Yr 11 and 12, students studying Chemistry are encouraged to enter this Australian wide competition.
- Big Bend Fossil Trip
Subject to staff availability and suitable weather, select students in Yr 8 can come on a geology field trip to the Big Bend in the Burdekin river north of Charters Towers. Opportunity to look at marine fossils and varied geological phenomena (including volcanic history) occurs on this fascinating trip.
- Biology Camp
As part of the Senior Biology course, students must complete a field trip. We choose to go to Cape Hillsborough for a 3 day camping field trip. An enjoyable and rewarding experience for all.
- Questacon Smart Moves
Every couple of years the visiting Questacon science team travel from Canberra to motivate and challenge our students into the role science plays in our world.
