Middle School Science
The focus on science in the middle school is to ensure all students are engaged in science and have the opportunity to develop a range of knowledge and processes that are essential for functioning in the ever changing scientific and technological world that we inhabit.
Consistency between science studied at our local partner primary schools and the science studied in Yr 8 and 9 is achieved by adopting a similar learning approach of the 5E's inquiry approach (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate). Students have access to a range of resources including data logging, science simulations using computers as well as access to well equipped science laboratories for the majority of lessons.
In Yr 8 a range of fundamental science ideas and experimenting skills covered in primary school are consolidated and extended in the units:
- Science of soft drink
- Mixing and Separating
- Unravelling the Past
- Astronomy
- Adapting to a changing world.
In Yr 9 a range of contextual units which show the relevance of science are explored in preparation for elective subject opportunities in Yr 10.
The units include:
- Atmospheric Science
- Entertainment Science
- Sports Science
- Biotechnology
