The Student Services Team (SST) is a group of professional staff and para-professional staff who support students with individual and special needs and both inside and outside the classroom.  Support is also provided to mainstream class teachers in supporting students and generating a safe learning environment.

 

Members of the SST generally work part time in the school except for the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) who works full time with another classroom based team of teachers and teacher aides.  The leader of the SST is the Guidance Officer, Mr Bruce Johnson.  A matrix of name contact details/availability times is listed after the individual basic roles within the SST.

 

Student Services:-

 

1) Guidance Officer (GO)

A Guidance Officer is available to assist students with concerns that arise during their secondary schooling.  Advice is given to students which enables them to select subjects that are appropriate vocationally and which are most likely to lead to success in school.

The Guidance Officer also advises students on the occupational options open to them.  Occupational choice should take into account both levels of academic ability and the students' various interests and competencies.  The Guidance Officer, Mr Bruce Johnson also assists with crisis counselling when necessary and  is available for appointments on 3 days a week (Phone 47904 333).

 

2) COMMUNITY EDUCATION CONSELLOR (CEC)

The Community Education Counsellor (CEC) Ollie Henaway is employed to assist all indigenous students and to improve a range academic at social outcomes. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents are asked to enquire about their children's progress at school, or anything else related to their education or schooling.  All appointments for interview are to be made through the school office. 3) SCHOOL CHAPLAIN (CHAPPY)

Our part time School Chaplain, Mr Ian Cumming is in the school originally for 3 days and now 4.5 days beginning Semester 2/2009.  He assists students with general wellbeing welfare and support as well as spiritual issues.  Parents are more than welcome to call the school and talk to the Chaplain.

Chaplaincy services are provided through Scripture Union (SU) with funding support from the Federal Government, Community and School P&C.

4&5) RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR TEACHERS

All students are expected to demonstrate positive behaviours at all times to ensure that learning is maximized for all.  Mr Keith Kiloh and Mr Craig Mathews work in the school part time and work with students and staff to generate an improved connection between

"Better Behaviour and  Better Learning".  Their work is both proactive and reactive and they have a major role for behaviour improvement before and after students return from suspension.            

6) SCHOOL BASED YOUTH HEALTH NURSE (SBYHN)

The School Based Youth Health Nurse, Mrs Pauline Hedgcock is available to talk to students, school staff and parents about health and wellbeing issues and concerns.  The Nurse is in the school three and a half days a week to assist concerned individuals.  The School Nurse is a health care professional and the service is confidential.  Her role also involves connecting students with appropriate support services inside and outside of the school and supporting a healthy school environment.  She also supports students/teachers in classrooms with health based learning and health based outside activities  and programs.

 

7) YOUTH SUPPORT COORDINATOR (YSC) 

The Youth Support Coordinator (YSC), initiative is a statewide early intervention and prevention program that assists young people who are at risk of disconnecting from education.

YSC's divide their time between onsite service delivery at educational sites and community development work.  YSC's are involved with working parties to address identified issues impacting on young people in our local community.

YSC's provide information, advocacy, referral and short term support services to assist schools to link young people to community services that support their participation in education and training.

YSC's provide services which consist of individual support and family work, provision of information, coordination of referrals, group work, developmental of whole of school strategies such as teacher, student and parent educaton programs.

Our Youth Support Coordinator is Jodi Pringle who is in the school for 2 days a week (Wednesday/Friday) between 9am and 3pm.  On Monday and Tuesday she works out of Home Hill State High School and on Thursday is situated at the Burdekin Community Association. 

 

8) SPECIAL EDUCATION UNIT (SEU) - LEARNING SUPPORT SERViCES (LSS)

Special Education and learning support services are coordinated by the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES).  Support Teachers and Teacher Aides work with students requiring assistance in various classrooms and across subjects.  These teachers can modify work programs, develop individual education programs for students, organise courses at other locations when available, as well as offer programs to gifted and talented students.  These services assist in bringing about increased opportunities for learning and greater equality of outcomes.  The HOSES, is Ms Jenny Boaz and further information and detail can be found in the relevant section of the Faculty area.
